The wiring system used for security fencing is known as the ‘earth return’ method and consists of a varying number of alternate positive (live) and negative (earth) wires. It has three major advantages:

Deterrent Effect

An intruder will receive an uncomfortable shock either by touching a live wire and earthing to ground or by making simultaneous contact with an earth wire and a live wire. To achieve this deterrent effect it is preferable to have 6500 to 8000 V with 1.5 to 3J energy on the fence line.

Detection Capability

The system will generate an alarm signal when an earth and a live wire make contact and ‘short’ the system, or if the circuit is broken by cutting any of the wires.

Reliability

Electric Security Fencing Technology is inherently tolerant of environmental conditions and is made more so with Dynamic Voltage Monitoring. With this feature the fence detection focus is on sudden, abrupt changes in voltage, allowing the system to ignore seasonal changes caused by vegetation growth or weather changes.
